ALL the huge producers of pet food run the risk of getting batches of ingredients, whether meats or grains, that are contaminated with carcinogenic and toxic chemicals.

QUESTION: WHAT ABOUT CANNED FOODS? My dog likes a little wet food mixed into his dry food. It makes him eat all of his food.
ANSWER: Most can dog dinners are pure garbage mixed in with 75% water. Its a huge waste of money and its not healthy at all. 2 of the worst wet foods out there are Little Caesars and Mighty Dog (as rated by the Whole Dog Journal). Pure Junk!
How much does a whole chicken cost per pound? About $1 per pound, if that? You can make the equivalent of 20 cans of chicken stew type dog food for a few dollars. Follow the basic recipe and if you don't have kelp or a few other ingredients, don't sweat it. Sometimes I make it with nothing but chicken and parsley. The dogs gobble it up, its cheap, filling, healthy and I know its better than anything in a can. The recipe is called SPOTS STEW. The Halo company created it for 1 sick cat about 25 years ago. QUESTION: WHAT ABOUT TREATS? IS TABLE FOOD A BAD TREAT?
ANSWER: Some dogs live for treat time. Its how they know they did something good. Treat time makes dogs happy. They know where the treats are kept and they can awaken from a coma if they hear the word "treats" or "goodies". Some dogs eat too many treats and others NEVER get treats. Treats can be quite expensive, that's why they're given in small quantities.
BUT the NUTRITIONAL VALUE of treats, MOST treats, is horrible. They don't even have to adhere to the loose standards that are required for dog food....its really the worst stuff you can give your dog. The worst type are the "soft and moist" type treats. Click on this site, please.
Just read the garbage they put into these popular treats...basically sawdust that sticks together with the added "animal fat" and red dye 40. The name implies real meat and/or bones but it has nothing of the sort. Image what just one a day for a period of say 5-7 years could do to your dog's health? Why not just feed him cancerous mice from a science lab that they perform experiments on? (I do know that dead mice and rats that are killed by exterminators DO go into the rendering plants where some dog foods come from. Aren't they poisoned?)

WHAT possible nutritional value is in these? There is none and what's worse, they actually harm the dog. I don't mean that after 1 bag of treats, the dog is going to die, but day after day, and year after year, these ingredients build up in the dog's cells, deep in its core and it eventually affects the dog's overall health. Since they are unhealthy, and unnecessary, quit buying them for your dog.
So now you want to know what kind of treats you SHOULD be buying if you are going to give him a reward every once in a while. Look for treats SUCH AS THIS when you go there. I'm not saying this is THE best, but its the TYPE of thing to look for
But here's my thinking on that particular treat....Look at the ingredients. Its nothing but 100% beef. So next time you are at Giant Eagle, Costco or any meat market, buy a lean roast or steak and cook some JUST for the dogs....cut it into little slices and freeze them. Its the exact same thing. Same goes for chicken. Season with garlic or italian seasoning..no salt and freeze bite size pieces in a zip-loc baggie.
OH, but you are saying...."MY vet says NO TABLE FOOD!"
Here is where I strongly disagree. I say that table MEAT-POTATOES-VEGGIES & some FRUIT is Great. The very finest dog foods on the market are human grade meats with veggies such as potatoes, zucchini, carrots, spinach, kale, peas and fruits like apple, blueberries & cranberries. So if its good enough to be sold for $50+ a bag, then why would it be wrong to feed it to your? It doesn't make any sense.
SOME TABLE FOODS ARE A BIG FAT NO-NO! The vet doesn't want to see your pet get violently ill with pancreatitis if it eats fatty meats, hams, greasy turkey skin/dark meat. Other things that make dogs really sick MIGHT POSSIBLY be lunch meats, too much hot dog, bacon grease, dairy products (except a little yogurt which is fine), the fat trimmings from beef and pork roasts. These things CAN lead to a trip to the emergency vet. The excessive fat causes the intestines to scream NO MORE! Then the vomiting and diarrhea starts and its hard and expensive to stop.
The GOOD types of table foods once again are lean meats, fruits, veggies, potatoes and possibly a little rice, barley or even oatmeal. The food you MUST avoid is often the most commonly fed.....its anything with WHEAT. Foods that are NO GOOD are crackers, bread, buns, cookies, the breading on chicken or fish, pretzels, noodles or any type of pasta. If you go to a drive thru at McDonalds with your dog, I know a lot of people give their dog McNuggets. The chicken is good but the breading makes it intolerable to dogs with wheat allergies....which is another subject. But every single type of dog biscuit on the market is made with WHEAT. I want you to start VIEWING WHEAT AS THE ENEMY.
WHEAT = allergies
ALLERGIES = misery for the dog and money at the vet
SO lets say this together:
I WILL NOT GIVE MY DOG ANY MORE WHEAT AND NO GREASY MEATS
If you want to give a good wholesome treat but still don't know what to look for after reading this, just come into the shop and buy one of my "Nothing But" treats because I know its safe and healthy for your dog.
Its a HIGH VALUE TREAT. That simply means that its NOT like the dry doggie biscuits (ie: Milkbones or Iams Biscuits) that have no flavor. Every drive-thru window will ask if you dog would like a treat.....its always a cheapie full-of-wheat biscuit. JUST SAY NO...NO MORE WHEAT. Wheat is CAUSING your dog a lot of ear infections, paw licking, red itchy skin, and excessive shedding. Dogs will eagerly sit up & beg or do a trick for a HIGH VALUE TREAT. Whether its used to teach a young pup to sit or to reward an older dog for not barking, these HIGH VALUE TREATS mean alot to your dog. They are sick and tired of the biscuits that are making them sick and tired.
